Why is Spectra recommended so often by lactation consultants?

Two reasons. First, the S1 and S2 Plus pull at 270 mmHg — true hospital-strength suction — which most moms need to maintain or build supply, and most insurance-covered pumps don't hit that number. Second, both come at the fully covered tier (S2 fully covered on most plans, S1 with a small upgrade fee on some). So Spectra is usually the strongest output you can get without paying out of pocket.

Which Spectra pump is fully covered through my insurance?

The S2 Plus (plug-in) and the 9 Plus (portable) are both fully covered on most insurance plans 1NW works with. The S1 Plus is fully covered on some plans and a $29–$99 upgrade on others. The Premier Wearable and Synergy Gold Portable are typically upgrade-fee SKUs. Check your specific plan's coverage in about 2 minutes with our coverage tool.

What's the difference between the S1 Plus and S2 Plus?

One feature: the battery. The S1 has a built-in rechargeable battery (~3 hours per charge); the S2 is plug-in only. Same 270 mmHg suction, same Natural Nursing Technology, same closed system, same flanges in the box. The S1 weighs about half a pound more because of the battery. If you'll always pump near an outlet, take the S2, fully covered. If you'll ever pump untethered, the S1 upgrade is the easiest call in the category.

Does Spectra make a wearable pump?

Yes — the Spectra Premier Wearable (launched May 2025) is Spectra's first true all-in-bra wearable. Motor, cup, and battery all sit in the bra. It pulls 280 mmHg — actually a touch higher than the S1/S2 Plus — which makes it one of the highest-suction wearables on the market. Tradeoff: it doesn't include Spectra's signature Natural Nursing Technology (the vibration + suckling pattern), since the form factor doesn't accommodate it. Typically an upgrade-fee SKU through insurance.

What is Natural Nursing Technology and which Spectra pumps have it?

Spectra's name for the combination of gentle vibration and suckling action built into the pump pattern, designed to mimic how a baby actually nurses (which is mechanically different from straight vacuum cycling). It's on the S1 Plus, S2 Plus, 9 Plus, and Synergy Gold lineup. It is not on the Premier Wearable — that pump uses a more traditional massage/expression cycling pattern, a tradeoff of the wearable form factor.

What are CaraCups and which Spectra pumps work with them?

CaraCups are Spectra's in-bra collection cups (24mm / 28mm, 250 mL each) that convert any Spectra electric pump into a hands-free wearable setup. Drop them in and the pump still does the work, but the cups sit in your bra instead of bottles in your hands. Compatible with the S1 Plus, S2 Plus, 9 Plus, and Synergy Gold lineup. Sold separately or in bundle.

Do I need to clean Spectra tubing?

No — every Spectra electric pump is a true closed system, with a physical barrier (backflow protector + duckbill valve) between the milk and the tubing/motor. The tubing doesn't need cleaning under normal use. Replace the duckbill valves and backflow protector membranes on the schedule Spectra recommends (varies by usage), and you're set.
