How it works

How to get your Medicaid-covered breast pump.

You don't need to call Medicaid, fill out complicated forms, or figure out your coverage on your own. Here's how it works:

  1. 1

    Tell Us About Your Plan

Enter your Medicaid details and due date. It takes about two minutes. We'll verify your breast pump coverage instantly — no phone calls, no hold music.

  2. 2

    Choose Your Breast Pump

Once your coverage is confirmed, you'll see exactly which breast pumps are available to you and what's fully covered. Pick the one that fits your life — whether you need a portable pump for work, a wearable for hands-free pumping, or a traditional double electric.

  3. 3

    We Handle the Rest

We coordinate with your healthcare provider, process the Medicaid claim, and ship your pump directly to your door, fully covered. Most moms receive their breast pump within 3–5 business days.

What's covered

What does Medicaid cover for breastfeeding?

Your Medicaid health insurance likely covers more than you think. Under the Affordable Care Act, most Medicaid plans include breastfeeding support and equipment at no out-of-pocket cost. Here's what's typically included:

Breast Pumps

Medicaid is federally required to cover breast pumps as a preventive benefit, but the specifics — which pumps, what frequency, whether you need a prescription — are set by each state and each Managed Care Organization (MCO) separately. Most Medicaid plans cover one double electric breast pump per pregnancy at no cost to you, and many also cover hospital-grade pump rentals for NICU or medical-need cases. The fastest way to know exactly what your plan covers is to check your coverage through our verification tool.

Coverage: Coverage required under federal Medicaid rules | Specifics vary by state and MCO | Most plans cover 1 pump per pregnancy in full

Breast Pump Replacement Parts

Replacement parts coverage under Medicaid varies significantly by state and MCO. Some plans cover functional parts (valves, tubing, membranes, flanges, shields) on a monthly or quarterly basis as durable medical equipment; others limit coverage to one replacement set per pump. Our care team can check your specific plan's parts schedule when we verify your coverage.

Coverage: Varies by state and MCO | Functional parts often covered | Quantity and frequency confirmed at coverage verification

Breast Milk Storage Bags

Most state Medicaid programs and MCOs cover breast milk storage bags as a medically necessary breastfeeding supply, with monthly shipments available to eligible moms. A small number of state Medicaid plans we work with don't cover bags — that's a decision made by those specific states and MCOs. We'll confirm exactly what your plan covers when we verify your coverage.

Coverage: Covered on most state Medicaid + MCO plans we work with | Monthly shipments for eligible moms | A few plans exclude bags

Lactation Consultations

Medicaid covers lactation support under federal preventive-care rules, but the visit limits, billing codes, and in-person vs telehealth options vary by state and MCO. Most Medicaid plans cover several lactation visits per pregnancy. 1 Natural Way's IBCLC-certified care team is available to help with latching, supply, and pumping questions regardless of which Medicaid plan you have.

Coverage: Federally mandated coverage | Visit limits + telehealth options vary by state | 1NW IBCLC support available regardless of plan

Moms First

Do You Need Both a Tabletop and a Wearable Pump?

Most IBCLCs recommend it. A tabletop double electric pump gives you the strongest suction and is the best option for building and maintaining your milk supply — especially in those early weeks. A wearable pump gives you freedom to move around, work, or handle life while you pump.

The catch? Insurance typically covers one pump per pregnancy, not both.

The Moms First Program

That's why we created Moms First. When you get your insurance-covered pump through 1 Natural Way, you can add a second pump at 20% off the retail price — so you're covered for every situation without paying full price elsewhere.

Every Moms First member also gets two IBCLC-led courses at no charge — Breastfeeding Basics and Nutrition 101 — so you have expert guidance from the start.

What that looks like:

  • Your Medicaid-covered pump at no cost to you (tabletop or wearable — your choice)
  • A second pump at 20% off retail through Moms First
  • Two IBCLC-led courses at no charge included with every Moms First membership

FAQ

Medicaid breast pump coverage: your questions answered.

Yes. Medicaid is federally required to cover breast pumps as a preventive benefit for pregnant and postpartum members. The specifics — which pumps, what frequency, prescription requirements — are set by each state and Managed Care Organization (MCO) separately. Check your specific plan's coverage in about 2 minutes with our verification tool.
1 Natural Way is a contracted Medicaid provider in 10 states: Alaska, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Texas. We also work with 20+ Managed Care Organizations (MCOs) across additional states. Even if your state isn't on the direct list, check your coverage — your MCO may be one of our partners.
Most state Medicaid programs contract out their day-to-day operations to private companies called Managed Care Organizations (MCOs). Your Medicaid card will typically list the MCO that administers your plan — examples include Aetna Better Health, CareSource, Molina Healthcare, Buckeye Health Plan, and many more. 1 Natural Way contracts with 20+ MCOs nationally, so even if your state isn't on our direct Medicaid list, you may still be covered through your MCO.
Many Medicaid plans require a prescription (sometimes called a Letter of Medical Necessity) from your OB-GYN, midwife, or pediatrician before they'll cover the pump. The specific requirements vary by state and MCO. When you start your coverage check with 1 Natural Way, we'll tell you if a prescription is needed and help you coordinate with your healthcare provider.
The specific pump models vary by state Medicaid plan and MCO. In general, most Medicaid plans cover one double electric breast pump per pregnancy. Some plans cover wearable pumps (Momcozy, Lansinoh DiscreetDuo Flow); others limit coverage to traditional double electric pumps (Spectra S2 Plus, Medela Pump In Style). 1 Natural Way will tell you exactly which pumps are covered under your specific Medicaid plan during coverage verification.
Many state Medicaid plans cover hospital-grade pump rentals for NICU babies, exclusive pumpers, low-supply moms, and other medical-need cases — typically with a prescription. Rental duration and copay rules vary by plan. If you're pumping for a NICU baby or were referred for a hospital-grade pump, mention that during your coverage check and our team will route you accordingly.
Coverage varies by state and MCO. Many Medicaid plans cover functional replacement parts (valves, tubing, membranes, flanges, shields) on a regular schedule, and some also cover breast milk storage bags monthly or quarterly. 1 Natural Way's MilkZoom program helps eligible moms set up automatic replacement-part shipments through their Medicaid plan.
The Medicaid plans and MCOs we work with prohibit us from allowing you to share in the cost of a breast pump — that means upgrade fees (where you'd pay the difference for a premium or wearable model) aren't an option on Medicaid. If you want a wearable like the Elvie Stride or Willow Go, you'd need to purchase it outside the Medicaid benefit. Our Moms First program offers 20% off any retail pump if that's a fit.
States require that Medicaid be used as your secondary insurance if you're covered by both Medicaid and another insurance provider (your "primary insurance"). If your primary insurance does not provide any coverage of a breast pump (including manual pumps and rentals), you may be eligible to receive one through Medicaid. The one exception: when a mom has Medicaid AND TRICARE military coverage — in that case, Medicaid becomes the primary insurance.
Moms First is a 1 Natural Way program that gives you 20% off any retail breast pump plus two IBCLC-led courses at no charge (Breastfeeding Basics and Nutrition 101). Most lactation consultants recommend having both a tabletop pump (for building milk supply) and a wearable pump (for on-the-go flexibility). Since Medicaid typically covers one pump and doesn't allow upgrade-fee splits, Moms First makes it affordable to get a second pump through us at a discount.
