What's covered

What does Medical Mutual cover for breastfeeding?

Your Medical Mutual health insurance likely covers more than you think. Under the Affordable Care Act, most Medical Mutual plans include breastfeeding support and equipment at no out-of-pocket cost. Here's what's typically included:

Breast Pumps

Most Medical Mutual of Ohio plans cover one double electric breast pump per pregnancy as a preventive women's health benefit under the ACA. You can choose from trusted brands like Spectra, Medela, Momcozy, Lansinoh, Motif, and more. Many models are fully covered — and if you want a wearable or premium upgrade, MMO covers a portion of the cost so you only pay the difference. Coverage applies across SuperMed PPO, HMO, and most employer-group plans.

Coverage: 1 breast pump per pregnancy | Fully covered options available | Upgrades available at reduced cost

Breast Pump Replacement Parts

Valves, tubing, membranes, flanges, and shields wear out and need regular replacement to keep your pump working properly. Most Medical Mutual of Ohio plans cover replacement parts monthly for up to 12 months postpartum through a resupply program. A typical monthly shipment includes 2 breast shields (your size), 2 sets of tubing, 2 membranes, 2 valves, and 6 collection/storage bottles — though exact quantities depend on your plan.

Coverage: Monthly resupply for up to 12 months postpartum | Tubing, membranes, valves, flanges, and bottles included | Quantities vary by plan

Breast Milk Storage Bags

Building a freezer stash or heading back to work? Medical Mutual's resupply program covers breast milk storage bags for eligible moms alongside the collection bottles (6 per month) included in the standard kit. Quantities and frequency depend on your specific MMO plan — we'll confirm what your plan covers when we verify your benefits.

Coverage: Covered for eligible MMO moms | Resupply program includes monthly bags + 6 collection bottles | Quantities verified per plan

Lactation Consultations

Breastfeeding doesn't always come naturally, and that's okay. Medical Mutual covers lactation support and counseling as a preventive women's health benefit, typically with no cost-sharing when delivered by an in-network provider. Most plans support both in-person and telehealth visits with IBCLC-certified consultants. Visit counts and accepted billing codes vary by plan — call MMO member services or check with 1NW to confirm your specific limits.

Coverage: Covered as preventive women's health benefit | no cost-share with in-network IBCLC | In-person or telehealth | Visit limits vary by plan

Moms First

Do You Need Both a Tabletop and a Wearable Pump?

Most IBCLCs recommend it. A tabletop double electric pump gives you the strongest suction and is the best option for building and maintaining your milk supply — especially in those early weeks. A wearable pump gives you freedom to move around, work, or handle life while you pump.

The catch? Insurance typically covers one pump per pregnancy, not both.

The Moms First Program

That's why we created Moms First. When you get your insurance-covered pump through 1 Natural Way, you can add a second pump at 20% off the retail price — so you're covered for every situation without paying full price elsewhere.

Every Moms First member also gets two IBCLC-led courses at no charge — Breastfeeding Basics and Nutrition 101 — so you have expert guidance from the start.

What that looks like:

  • Your Medical Mutual-covered pump at no cost to you (tabletop or wearable — your choice)
  • A second pump at 20% off retail through Moms First
  • Two IBCLC-led courses at no charge included with every Moms First membership

Yes. Medical Mutual covers breastfeeding support and counseling as a preventive women's health benefit, typically with no cost-sharing when you see an in-network IBCLC. Both in-person and telehealth visits are supported on most plans. The exact number of visits varies by plan, so we recommend confirming with MMO member services. 1 Natural Way also offers access to IBCLC-certified lactation consultants directly through our team, and our Moms First program includes two IBCLC-led courses at no charge to supplement your covered visits.
Most Medical Mutual plans do require a prescription (sometimes called a Letter of Medical Necessity) from your OB-GYN, midwife, or primary care provider before they'll cover the pump. The good news: you don't have to chase it down. Once you order through 1 Natural Way, we coordinate directly with your provider's office to get the prescription on file. It's part of the "we handle the rest" promise.
